Welcome to my 4th Grade Science Problem-Based Learning Unit
Unit Title: Mt. Zion Meteorologists & Weather Watchers Grade Level: 4th Grade Subject: Science Duration: The learning during this lesson will last 3-5 days, but students will continue throughout the year to report the weather on morning announcements.
Problem: In our school, the morning announcements are given by students, via technology used to stream live feed and videos to all classroom televisions. They have a green screen so they can change the background for each section of the news being given. Our announcements are missing a weather report, and many students could use this valuable information to help them prepare to properly dress throughout the week and prepare for dangerous weather, due to of the unpredictable weather conditions lately. The fourth grade Science standards expects students to learn about analyzing weather and collecting data to predict weather patterns and changes. This PBL unit will require 4th grade students to collect data about the daily weather to report it as meterologists on the morning announcements using a weather map. Information about the fronts, temperature, and precipitation will be included in a script written by students for the announcements.
Technology Standard: Research and Information Fluency. Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry. b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media. c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks. d. Process data and report results.
Georgia Content Standard: S4E4. Students will analyze weather charts/maps and collect weather data to predict weather events and infer patterns and seasonal changes. a. Identify weather instruments and explain how each is used in gathering weather data and making forecasts (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, anemometer). b. Using a weather map, identify the fronts, temperature, and precipitation and use the information to interpret the weather conditions. c. Use observations and records of weather conditions to predict weather patterns throughout the year. d. Differentiate between weather and climate.
Prerequisite Skills: Conduct simple investigations, use tools for collecting data, use charts and graphs, identify patterns of change, research for information
Objectives:The objective of this unit is for students to understand that some events in nature have a repeating pattern. Students should learn that weather is a daily occurance and climate occurs over an extended period of time. They should also be able to identify weather instruments such as a thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, and anemometer. Through such knowlege, students will be able to share their gathered information in a Power Point presentation and daily news weather reports as meteorologists.
