Goal: Students will be able to produce a school-wide daily television weather program to be used over closed circuit television by predicting the weather using weather instruments, and collecting weather data from local sources. (Newspapers, local radio, internet sites, and local television stations). Hook: I will introduce this unit by showing students a clip from the morning news, including the weather report, after watching our own school morning announcements. After watching, I will ask students to compare our news to the news clip I show them. We will discuss how adding a weather report to our own school news would be beneficial for students and teachers. I will begin by creating a KWHL chart with the class for students to share what they already know about weather. We will also begin to fill in what we want to know about weather and the analysis of its data.
Lesson A: Essential Question: How are weather instruments used in gathering weather data and making forecasts? Students will explore internet resources about different tools for gathering weather data, such as a thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, and anemometer. They will add information about each tool to the group's Power point presentation. They will also start a script for their group weather report video, using the weather tools we have in our classroom to evaluate the weather and add collected and analyzed data about the current weather pattern. As a class, we will add to our KWHL chart in what we have learned and how we can continue to learn more.
Lesson B:Essential Question: How are weather maps used to identify fronts, temperature, and precipitation?Students will examine patterns in fronts, temperature, and precipitation by observing weather maps in newspapers, on local radio, internet sites, and local television stations. They will add information to their group Power point presentation about how to understand patterns in fronts, temperature, and precipitation. As well, groups will add to their video weather report script to identify the front we are currently experiencing, as well as future temperature and precipitation predictions. We will also add to our class KWHL to share new knowledge gathered and discussed in groups and plan future learning.
Lesson C:Essential Question: What is the difference between weather and climate? In the final lesson, students will research information about the difference between weather and climate, and add it to their group's Power point presentation, along with a prediction of the weather pattern throughout the year based on observations and records of weather conditions. Students will finalize their scripts for the weather report, and create a video as meteorologists detailing data about current weather patterns using a weather map. The group video should also include an explanation of the symbols on the weather map so the audience can understand the patterns in weather conditions. Students will present their Power point presentations to share the knowledge they gained about weather, as well as presenting their video clip for the morning announcements. The class will complete the KWHL chart to share what students have learned, and they will vote for which presentation will be the first to go on the morning announcements. Groups will continue to rotate presenting daily, including the responsibility of gathering and interpreting weather data. Final Power point presentations and video weather reports will be graded based on a teacher created rubric.
