Collaboration
Throughout this unit, students will be engaged in a collaborative project as they create a PowerPoint presentation within each lesson to add information they have gathered about the content and what new knowledge they gained. Each lesson’s essential question will lead groups to search for specific information to add to their presentation, such as weather instruments and how to gather data to make forecasts, using information from weather maps, and understanding the difference between weather and climate. Students will also collaboratively share their skills in using PowerPoint to engage in designing a creative display of what they have learned. In addition, groups will also work together to create a video to report the weather on the morning announcements. Their collaborative efforts in gathering and analyzing data to report will be displayed as they include important content knowledge, and successfully inform the audience of such information.

As students work in collaborative groups, I will serve as a support to students by providing them with appropriate resources and the necessary tools for them to gather the content information needed. Students will be using scientific tools that they may not be familiar with, and I will instruct them on how to use them safely and effectively. I will also provide them with guidance in how to use the necessary technology tools for designing a PowerPoint presentation and creating their group video for the morning announcements.

I have found that students are more willing to collaborate in groups where they feel comfortable working with the other members. With knowledge of my students and who they work best with, I will form groups with four members, two girls and two boys if possible with class gender ratios. I will also choose groups ensuring that there is at least one member in each that has a good foundational knowledge of using the technology tools in the unit.

As students gather information about the content, they will use Google Docs to share their ideas and resources they locate. They will also use Microsoft PowerPoint software to create a collaborative group presentation displaying what all members have learned about weather and collecting its data. Students will use Microsoft Movie Maker to create their weather report video clip for the morning announcements, including personal recordings using classroom cameras and images of weather maps and symbols. When students go to present the weather report daily on the morning announcements, they will use the media center’s technology to live stream to all classroom televisions.

As students work collaboratively on their Google Doc to gather information and resources, their revisions will be tracked. I will monitor to ensure that all members of each group are actively participating and contributing equally. Students will all be required to contribute information to the PowerPoint presentation and weather report video clip, but will also be assessed based on the requirement to take a role in speaking in both. All students must share additional information about the slides throughout the final presentation, and they must also have a speaking role in the video weather report to share collected data and future forecasts.
